What is digital marketing?

Oct 8, 2019 · 1 min read · DIGP

Digital marketing is simply marketing done through digital channels: search engines, websites, social media, email, and apps. If a customer can reach it on a screen, digital marketing is how you meet them there.

The main channels

  • Search (SEO and ads): showing up when someone searches for what you offer.
  • Social media: building relationships and awareness where people already spend time.
  • Content: articles, videos, and guides that answer questions and pull people in.
  • Email: direct, owned communication with people who opted in.
  • Website: the hub everything else points back to.

Why it matters

Two reasons stand out. First, that is where your customers are; attention has moved online, and marketing followed it. Second, it is measurable. Unlike a billboard, you can see exactly how a digital campaign performed and adjust.

How it has changed

When we first wrote this, digital marketing was about channels and campaigns. Today, the fastest-moving part is intelligence: AI that answers customers, personalizes experiences, and automates the busywork behind each channel. The definition still holds, but the leverage has shifted toward the software doing the work.

If you are starting out, get the fundamentals right first: a fast website, clear messaging, and one channel done well. Then layer intelligence on top.
